Every month SOCO wants to highlight our past non-profit partners. We are thankful for the organizations that are helping make this world a better place. This month’s non-profit highlight is Makarios.
Founded in the spring of 2004 by Sharla Megilligan, Makarios is a non-profit organization dedicated to meeting the spiritual, physical, emotional and intellectual needs of impoverished people.

Unfortunately more than one-third of the Dominican Republic lives in poverty, with almost twenty percent of the population living in extreme poverty. Makarios believes quality education is the way out of poverty by raising and training children with quality education and vocational training so they may attain better-paying jobs.
Makarios sets up what they call, “Christ-centered, sustainable educational and outreach programs.” Through teaching core and elective subjects, sharing in prayer and chapel, creating safe environments and local leaders, and providing health care, Makarios is working to change the Dominican Republic for the better.
We’d like to thank Makarios for helping alleviate poverty! You are our heroes.
